Sport Climbing Debuts as an Official Event, Showcasing Koreas Rising Young Athletes in Busan
[Sports/CTN] Reporter Geumhyun Kim — The Korea Alpine Federation, led by President Cho Jwa-jin, announced that the sport climbing event of the 55th National Youth Sports Festival was successfully held on May 23 at the Busan International Sport Climbing Center in Busan Metropolitan City.
The National Youth Sports Festival is the largest comprehensive student sports event in Korea, designed to discover promising young athletes and expand the foundation of youth sports nationwide. The addition of sport climbing as a newly established event this year carried special significance, providing young athletes with opportunities for challenge and growth while laying the groundwork for the sports continued development in both school and professional athletics.
This year marked the first time sport climbing was officially included in the National Youth Sports Festival. The competition featured lead climbing events for boys and girls under the age of 15. Athletes who completed their 2026 athlete registration and advanced through regional qualifying competitions represented their respective provinces and cities in intense competition.
The event was hosted by the Korea Sports Council and jointly organized by the Korea Alpine Federation, Busan Alpine Federation, Busan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Education, Busan Sports Council, and the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation supported the event, while The North Face served as the official sponsor.
In the boys under-15 lead climbing category, Kim Yoon-gyu (Chungnam, Asan Galsan Middle School) claimed first place, followed by Seo Jun-seo (Jeonnam, Muntae Middle School) in second and Go Hwi-chan (Gyeonggi, Astro Man) in third.
In the girls under-15 lead climbing category, Kim Ha-bin (Busan, Singok Middle School) won first place, while Kwon Ga-eun (Gyeonggi, Namyangju Dasan Middle School) and Song Ji-yeon (Chungnam, Onyang Girls Middle School) placed second and third, respectively.
An official from the Korea Alpine Federation stated, As sport climbing made its debut as a newly established event at the National Youth Sports Festival, this competition was a meaningful opportunity to confirm the potential and growth of future climbing athletes. We will continue our efforts to foster youth athletes and expand the foundation of sport climbing in Korea.
