An official from the Yeongtong-gu Health Center in Suwon stated on August 4, "We will intensively deploy quarantine personnel so that citizens do not experience discomfort from pests in parks and streams. We will continuously check affected areas and continue proactive pest control." The Yeongtong-gu Health Center announced that it conducted a joint pest control operation along the Shindong Riverside Park and Woncheonri-cheon area following complaints about midges and flies after the rainy season.
Fourteen personnel from the Yeongtong-gu Health Center and local quarantine workers performed larva control around habitats such as stream edges, vegetation, and water gates. Adult pest control was also carried out along walking paths, streetlights, and grassy areas.
The health center plans to coordinate with park and river management departments during weeding schedules to clear pest shelters. It plans to conduct another joint operation on August 25 and adjust future efforts based on weather conditions and pest trends.
While deploying personnel to clear pests following complaints demonstrates administrative responsiveness, skepticism remains.
Critics argue that mobilizing 14 workers for a one-day operation only after citizen complaints exploded over predictable post-monsoon pest swarms borders on reactive showmanship. To move beyond temporary measures and deliver real results, the health center must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as year-round pest monitoring systems and eco-friendly periodic extermination schedules linked with regular vegetation management.
