Young-sook Cho, Director of Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research & Extension Services, stated ahead of the evaluation event on August 6, "The Pepper Variety Evaluation Event is significant in providing field information so growers can select and cultivate superior varieties. We will do our best to increase farm income by developing technologies to address climate change." The Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research & Extension Services announced that it will hold the '2026 Pepper Variety Evaluation' at the Yeongyang Pepper Research Institute with around 350 participants.
According to the agency, the event, now in its 19th year since starting in 2008, was organized to provide data on yield, pest resistance, physiological disorders, and overall quality, allowing farmers to observe and select suitable varieties directly in the test fields.
The event will feature expert lectures on disease diagnosis and control, alongside updates on this year's pepper crop conditions and pest occurrences. Additionally, over 100 high-quality disease-resistant commercial varieties, along with 10 local heritage-based varieties developed by the Yeongyang Pepper Research Institute, will be introduced. Established in 1995, the institute added that it has developed around 150 field technologies and is focusing on climate change adaptation solutions.
While providing opportunities to compare disease-resistant varieties and share field knowledge offers a plausible narrative for supporting farmers, skepticism remains.
Critics argue that hosting repetitive annual field showcases while touting climate change countermeasures borders on reactive showmanship. To deliver real results beyond a one-day observational gathering, Gyeongbuk Province must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as expanding direct subsidies for climate-resilient seedlings and establishing comprehensive agricultural disaster prevention systems.
