Joo-sik Ha, Director General of the Institutional Policy Planning Bureau at the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), stated during the annual meeting, "International cooperation is essential to maximize the recovery of criminal proceeds and block illicit funds early. Public-private partnerships through swift information sharing with financial institutions will greatly help interrupt illicit financial flows." The Financial Services Commission's FIU announced that it attended the 2026 Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) Annual Meeting held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
According to the FSC, the meeting held from July 27 to 31 was attended by around 350 delegates from 41 member states and international organizations including the IMF and World Bank. Member states discussed cross-border fraud trends and the rising risks of money laundering and terrorist financing.
The Korean delegation presented its payment suspension mechanism as a response to emerging scam crimes, emphasizing early intervention against illegal funds. Members agreed on the need for technical assistance, information sharing, and investigative cooperation against transnational organized crime. Following case presentations from Malaysia, Singapore, and Canada, the FIU highlighted public-private cooperation to prevent illegal fund flows.
While sharing domestic regulatory mechanisms at international forums offers a plausible narrative for diplomatic outreach, skepticism remains.
Critics argue that presenting routine domestic measures abroad while citizens continue to suffer from complex online scam crimes borders on reactive showmanship. To deliver real results beyond symbolic attendance at overseas conferences, the FIU must establish concrete policy alternatives, such as bilateral treaties for real-time asset freezing and operational mechanisms for recovering overseas criminal proceeds.
