김제시, 가뭄 직격탄 맞은 농촌 두고 코스모스 보존에 총력

[김제/CTN]최동주 기자= 정효곤 김제시 도시건설국장이 현장을 방문해 "악조건 속에서도 아름다운 도로변 꽃길을 지켜내기 위해 철저한 현장 점검과 총력 급수를 진행하겠다"라며 "시민들과 방문객에게 쾌적하고 아름다운 코스모스 경관을 선사할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"라고 밝혔다. 전북특별자치도 김제시는 연일 이어지는 폭염과 가뭄 속에서 주요 코스모스 꽃길과 단야의 지평선 꽃정원을 지키기 위해 비상 급수 작업을 추진하고 있다고 발표했다.

김제시에 따르면 최근 최고기온이 36도를 웃도는 무더위가 지속되고 강수량이 부족해 도로변 경관 작물들이 말라 죽을 위기에 처했다.

이에 시는 폭염과 가뭄이 해갈될 때까지 비상 급수와 현장 관리를 이어갈 방침이다. 지난 8월 7일 정효곤 도시건설국장은 단야의 꽃 정원 코스모스 꽃밭 현장을 직접 찾아 급수 작업 진행 상황을 살피고 근로자들을 격려했다고 덧붙였다.

이처럼 폭염으로 식재된 경관 작물의 폐사를 막고 시를 찾는 방문객들에게 아름다운 도심 환경을 제공하기 위해 현장 관리 작업을 진행하는 것은 관광 자원 보존 차원에서 고려해 볼 수 있는 조치다.

다만 극심한 가뭄으로 농경지 타들어감이 우려되는 시기에 관상용 꽃밭 급수에 행정 자원을 쏟아붓고 국장이 현장 지도점검 사진을 찍는 것은 우선순위가 뒤바뀐 보여주기 행정이라는 지적을 피하기 어렵다. 전시성 꽃길 살리기에 골몰할 것이 아니라, 가뭄으로 실질적 피해를 입는 농가에 대한 긴급 농업용수 공급을 최우선으로 삼고, 뙤약볕 아래 급수 작업에 동원되는 현장 근로자들의 온열질환 예방을 위한 작업 중지 수칙 준수가 우선되어야 할 것으로 보인다.

Critics argue that prioritizing ornamental flowers over struggling agricultural fields during extreme heatwaves borders on administrative showmanship. Rather than focusing on decorative plants, the city needs practical measures, such as prioritizing emergency water transport for agricultural drought relief and enforcing mandatory rest periods for field laborers working under harsh weather conditions.
