Nam-su Kim, Head of the Health Promotion Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated regarding school allergy response, "Since anaphylaxis determines children's lives, on-site response is key. We will work closely with the Office of Education and specialized agencies to create a safe educational environment for our children free from allergic diseases." Gyeonggi Province announced on August 1 that it completed anaphylaxis and emergency allergy response training for 1,655 school health teachers across the province.
According to the province, the training was organized to strengthen safety systems in schools in response to the rising incidence of food allergies and anaphylaxis among children and adolescents.
The training was held 14 times starting from July 10, marking the first large-scale practical training since 2018. Medical specialists served as instructors, covering anaphylaxis diagnosis criteria and emergency response methods. The province added that health teachers participated in hands-on practice using educational models to inject epinephrine auto-injectors.
While summoning health teachers, the core of school health, to conduct practical emergency response training such as epinephrine administration amidst rising fatal anaphylaxis cases in children offers a plausible narrative for strengthening school safety networks, skepticism remains.
Critics point out that conducting large-scale practical training a full eight years after the relevant law was revised and framing it as if Gyeonggi Province has taken significant preemptive action borders on belated administrative showmanship and excessive self-praise. Rather than focusing on one-time collective training limited to health teachers, the province needs practical measures that parents can immediately feel safe with, such as mandating all faculty and staff, including homeroom teachers, to be constantly trained in epinephrine injection and stationing emergency medicine kits in all classrooms.
