이번 전시는 '임전 허문 마지막 개인전'이라는 이름으로 마련됐으며, 화백이 70년에 걸쳐 이어온 예술 인생과 작품세계를 총망라하는 자리라는 점에서 의미를 더한다.
특히 운림산방 4대 화맥을 현대적으로 계승해온 그의 예술적 여정을 정리하는 사실상 마지막 개인전으로 평가받고 있다.
임전 허문 화백은 25세의 젊은 나이에 요절한 남종화가 임인 허림의 독자로 태어났다. 생후 11개월 만에 부친을 여의었으며, 이후 7세부터 백부인 남농 허건의 슬하에서 성장하며 본격적으로 남종화의 전통과 정신을 체득했다.
남농 허건은 전통 남종화를 현대적으로 재해석하며 ‘신남화(新南畵)’라는 새로운 조형세계를 개척한 인물이다.
이러한 예술적 환경 속에서 성장한 허문 화백은 단순한 전통의 답습에 머물지 않고, 홍익대학교 에서 수학하며 실경 중심의 산수와 이론적 탐구를 접목한 독창적인 화풍을 구축해 나갔다.
그의 작품세계를 대표하는 핵심은 바로 ‘운무산수(雲霧山水)’다.
허문 화백은 1980년대 이후 선염기법을 집중적으로 연구하며 안개와 구름의 흐름을 화면의 중심 요소로 끌어올렸다. 기존 산수화에서 산세가 화면의 구조를 이뤘다면, 그의 작품에서는 운무가 공간을 지배하며 초월적이고 몽환적인 분위기를 형성한다.
화면 가득 번져 흐르는 안개와 구름은 산세를 감싸며 현실 너머의 정신적 공간을 구현하고, 이러한 독창성으로 인해 그는 화단에서 ‘안개 작가’라는 별칭으로도 불려왔다.
미술평론가 신항섭 은 "허문의 운무와 마주하면 신선의 세계를 거니는 듯 아득한 공간의 깊이에 빠지게 된다"며 "그의 운무산수는 단순한 시각적 이해를 넘어 정신적 영역에 도달해 있다"고 평가한 바 있다.
허문 화백은 또한 대한민국미술대전 심사위원과 운영위원 등을 역임하며 한국화단의 중심에서 활동해왔다. 그의 작품세계는 전통의 계승을 넘어, 오늘날 전통회화가 어떤 방식으로 현재성과 동시대를 획득할 수 있는가에 대한 질문이기도 하다.
이번 전시는 한 예술가의 회고를 넘어, 200년 가까이 이어져온 운림산방 화맥이 오늘의 미학으로 어떻게 재해석될 수 있는지를 보여주는 상징적 자리로 주목받고 있다.

A final solo exhibition by renowned Korean ink landscape painter Heo Moon, a leading figure of the fourth generation of the Unrim Sansbang artistic lineage, will be held from May 20 to May 25, 2026, at Insa Art Plaza Gallery in Insadong, Seoul.
The exhibition, titled “Lim Jeon Heo Moon Final Solo Exhibition,” is regarded as a meaningful retrospective that encapsulates the artist’s 70-year career and artistic achievements. It is also considered the symbolic closing chapter of a painter who has carried forward the 200-year tradition of Korean Southern School landscape painting.
Heo Moon was born as the only son of the late painter Heo Rim, who passed away at the age of 25. After losing his father at just 11 months old, he was raised under the guidance of his uncle, Namnong Heo Geon, from the age of seven.
Namnong Heo Geon was widely known for modernizing traditional Southern School painting and pioneering what became known as “New Southern Painting.” Growing up in such an environment, Heo Moon naturally inherited the traditional techniques and philosophy of Korean ink painting while also developing his own contemporary artistic language.
After studying at Hongik University, he established a distinctive artistic world by combining realistic landscape observation with theoretical exploration.
The defining feature of his work is his signature “Cloud and Mist Landscape” style. Since the 1980s, Heo Moon has intensively explored wash techniques that elevate fog and clouds into the central subject of the composition. Unlike traditional landscape paintings in which mountains form the structural core, his paintings allow mist and clouds to dominate the space, creating a transcendent and spiritual atmosphere.
His flowing layers of mist envelop mountain forms and transform natural scenery into metaphysical landscapes, earning him the nickname “the painter of mist.”
Art critic Shin Hang-seop once remarked, “Encountering Heo Moon’s mist is like wandering through the world of immortals, immersed in an infinite depth of space,” adding that his landscapes transcend visual appreciation and enter the realm of spirituality.
Throughout his career, Heo Moon also served as a judge and executive committee member for the Korea Grand Art Exhibition, remaining at the center of Korea’s contemporary art scene. His work continuously questioned how traditional Korean painting could remain relevant and alive in the present era.
More than a retrospective, this exhibition stands as a significant artistic statement showing how the centuries-old lineage of Unrim Sansbang can be reinterpreted through a modern visual language.
