[Politics/Admin] Seosan Mayor Candidate Lee Wan-seop Urges to "Stop Election-driven 'Number Politics' Ignoring the Essence of Population Policy," Rebuffing Candidate Maeng Jeong-ho's Offensive
[Seosan=CTN] Reporter Geum-hyeon Ga = People Power Party Seosan Mayor candidate Lee Wan-seop strongly criticized Democratic Party candidate Maeng Jeong-ho's claims regarding population decline, calling them a "distorted political offensive that fails to understand the essence of population policy." This comes as a direct rebuttal to the population issues recently raised by candidate Maeng on social media (SNS).
Candidate Lees campaign issued a statement saying, "Blaming the recent decline in Seosan's population entirely on the failure of the 8th democratically elected municipal government is a distortion of reality." They explained, "Looking at the actual trend, the population growth continued until the early days of the 8th term, and the decline became full-blown after 2024 amid a nationwide industrial downturn and demographic structural changes."
The campaign further pointed out, "Most local cities in South Korea are suffering from a complex crisis involving concentration in the metropolitan area, low birth rates, youth outflow, and industrial restructuring," adding, "Attributing all of these structural problems to the current administration is an irresponsible approach that only fuels anxiety among citizens."
Candidate Lees side cited the economic downturn in the Daesan Petrochemical Complex, the nationwide industrial recession, deepening concentration in the metropolitan area, the migration of the youth demographic, and housing competition between cities as the primary causes of the recent population decline. They emphasized, "Population is not a mere number that moves by political slogans, but a combined outcome of a citys competitiveness where industry, jobs, housing, education, healthcare, and living environments operate together." They criticized the approach of utilizing numbers politically while ignoring the structural reality of the local economy—where the stagnation of the Daesan Complex leads to a decrease in subcontractors and reduced consumption—as a "fragmented and shallow approach."
They also addressed the shifting housing dynamics with neighboring Dangjin City. "It is true that some younger generations have moved due to the expansion of new apartment supplies and relatively lower housing costs in the Dangjin area in recent years," Lee's campaign explained, noting that analyzing industrial and housing competitiveness between cities is essential to properly understanding population issues.
In particular, Lees campaign took a direct aim at the previous administration. "The current population flow is not a phenomenon that appeared overnight, but the result of industrial and urban policies accumulated over several years," they sharply noted. "They should first look back at how well they prepared the foundation for future industries, the corporate investment environment, and the infrastructure for youth settlement during the 7th term."
Lastly, Lees side stated, "The core of population policy is not a mere competition over subsidies, but creating a city where citizens want to stay and where young people want to return." They highlighted that candidate Lee Wan-seop has consistently pursued policies to enhance city competitiveness, such as expanding high-tech industrial foundations, responding to the Daesan Complex crisis, strengthening healthcare and welfare, creating a child-friendly environment, and expanding cultural and sports infrastructure.
The campaign concluded, "What citizens want right now is not the instigation of a crisis, but proven administrative capability that accurately reads reality and crafts solutions. We will take responsibility for Seosan's future through practical enhancement of city competitiveness, rather than election-driven number politics."
