이완섭 후보 측은 성명을 통해 “최근 서산시의 인구 감소 흐름을 마치 민선 8기의 시정 실패인 것처럼 몰아붙이는 것은 현실을 왜곡하는 주장”이라며 “인구 흐름을 보면 민선 8기 초반까지는 증가세가 유지되었으나, 2024년 이후 전국적인 산업 침체와 인구 구조 변화가 맞물리며 감소세가 본격화된 것”이라고 해명했다.
