Chungnam Province Secures Summer Safety Through Disaster Response System
Province holds communication meeting with cities, counties, and related agencies to share response measures

[Chungnam/CTN] Reporter Han Sung-jin = Chungnam Province has officially activated its disaster response system to protect residents lives and property from summer floods and heat waves.

On May 13, the province convened a Summer Natural Disaster Preparedness Communication Meeting in the main conference hall of the provincial government, chaired by Shin Il-ho, Director of Safety Planning. The meeting was attended by representatives from cities, counties, and related agencies including the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration.

According to the Meteorological Administration, the Chungnam region is expected to experience higher-than-average temperatures this summer, with localized heavy rainfall leading to greater variability in precipitation across the province.

To minimize damage from natural disasters, participating agencies shared their respective response measures, reviewed cooperation systems, and discussed ways to expedite ongoing disaster recovery and prevention projects. They also explored strategies for building stronger collaboration among agencies such as the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration, Korea Water Resources Corporation, Korea Rural Community Corporation, and the Chungnam Provincial Police Agency.

Agencies analyzed past disaster response cases, identifying shortcomings and best practices to inform this years strategies.

The province is operating a 24-hour Disaster Situation Management Division staffed with dedicated personnel. To strengthen residents preparedness, it has established evacuation plans for 5,905 villages under the principle of One Village, One Shelter, One Drill. Vulnerable groups unable to evacuate on their own are paired with designated Safety Partners to assist them.

By analyzing big data on flood-prone areas and shelter locations, the province has developed optimal evacuation routes and built a web-based system to support resident evacuations.

To prepare for unexpected heavy rains and flooding, Chungnam has established river control and evacuation systems covering 58 flood-risk river sections (282 sites) and 45 sections (70 sites) with resident evacuation plans.

Additionally, the province will dispatch field situation managers to cities and counties to strengthen on-site response, and it plans to launch a new Chungnam Victim Support Center to help alleviate suffering and protect victims rights.

For heat wave response, the province has reinforced systems in line with revised weather alert protocols, including Severe Heat Wave Warnings and Tropical Night Advisories. Measures include reclassifying vulnerable groups, operating mobile cooling buses, and promoting the use of parasols through public campaigns.

Safety Planning Director Shin Il-ho emphasized: As extreme disaster situations become more frequent due to climate change, close communication and cooperation among agencies are more important than ever. We will concentrate all efforts to minimize damage to residents lives and property from summer natural disasters.
