"The Legitimate Successor of Innovative Education, Lee Byeong-do"... Six Former Education Chiefs Declare Overwhelming Support
Icons of innovation including Cho Hee-yeon and Lee Jae-jung gather in Cheonan: "The only candidate with both field experience and administrative prowess"
May 14, 2026
[Cheonan/CTN] Reporter Kang Hyun-su = Former city and provincial education chiefs, who have led the wave of educational innovation in Korea, have declared their full support for Lee Byeong-do, a candidate for Chungnam Education Superintendent, calling for uninterrupted innovation in Chungnam education.
On the 13th, six former superintendents, including Cho Hee-yeon of Seoul and Lee Jae-jung of Gyeonggi, stated through a declaration of support that they strongly endorse Lee Byeong-do as the representative democratic and progressive candidate for Chungnam Education Superintendent. They cited Lees 28-year career as a teacher and his proven administrative capabilities as Director of the Education Bureau at the Chungnam Office of Education and Chief of the Cheonan Education Support Office as key reasons for their support. They evaluated Lees life as the living history of democratic education in Chungnam and described him as a practitioner who has proven innovative alternatives through field action.
In particular, the former superintendents noted that Lee is a unified candidate elected with the overwhelming support of the progressive camp, including civil society, labor, and parent organizations in Chungnam. They expressed confidence that "the democratic education forces of Chungnam will unite and win under the name of Lee Byeong-do," clarifying that he is the only person capable of realizing integrated education beyond conflict.
They also showed deep trust in Lees policy vision. Emphasizing that the values of innovative schools and democratic citizenship education must continue without interruption in Chungnam, they mentioned Lees "Classroom-centric Breath Design" and "Old Downtown Specialization" policies as excellent examples of learning-centered education. They appealed that education should not become a tool for political strife or return to old practices, urging people to empower an education expert proven by practice rather than slogans.
The declaration of support went beyond simple words. Former superintendents Cho Hee-yeon, Jang Hwi-guk, and Jang Seok-ung personally visited the briefing room of Cheonan City Hall to read the declaration, adding sincerity to their support. Former Seoul Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon stated, "It is right to support a candidate selected by civil society," while former Gwangju Superintendent Jang Hwi-guk expressed trust, saying Lee is "the candidate who can best develop the educational innovations we have achieved".
Candidate Lee Byeong-do responded, "I will make the path of innovative education, which senior superintendents have walked, blossom even more grandly in Chungnam," adding, "I will sublimate it into democratic citizenship education where educational stakeholders, such as parents, participate in a bottom-up manner".
This declaration of support by former education leaders reflects a strong contemporary demand that Chungnam education move toward future-oriented innovation rather than repeating the past. Attention is focused on how Candidate Lee Byeong-do, having inherited the legitimacy of innovation, will reshape the landscape of Chungnam education.
