Jeju Province Pushes to Designate Mulchat Oreum Wetland as Its First Protected Wetland Area
[Jeju/CTN] CTN Reporter Ga Geum-hyun — Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is moving forward with procedures to designate the Mulchat Oreum Wetland, located within the Saryeoni Forest Trail in Gyorae-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, as Jejus first provincially protected wetland area.
Separate from the five existing Ramsar wetlands in the province, this will be the first wetland protection area directly designated by the Governor of Jeju Province. The designated area will include 8,489 square meters of protected wetland and 316,058 square meters of surrounding management area, totaling 324,547 square meters.
The province plans to gather opinions from residents and stakeholders through a 20-day public notice period from May 21 to June 10 before issuing the final designation announcement.
Opinions submitted during the period will be reviewed comprehensively in consideration of relevant laws, the purpose of the designation, and surrounding conditions.
Mulchat Oreum Wetland is a rare mountainous wetland formed within a volcanic cone crater. It has been identified as a biodiversity treasure trove, home to 187 plant species and 44 animal species, while preserving the original form of a natural wetland.
The site also serves as a key habitat for endangered wildlife species such as peregrine falcons, Eurasian hobbies, and fairy pittas. Due to its unique topographical and scenic value, the area has long been considered in urgent need of systematic conservation.
Since 2008, public access to Mulchat Oreum has been restricted under the Natural Rest Year System, with temporary access allowed only for about two weeks each year during the Saryeoni Forest Trail Festival.
The new protection area designation is intended to establish a more systematic conservation and management framework for the wetlands ecological value, beyond the existing access restrictions.
Jeju Province plans to review phased opening measures regarding visitor numbers, routes, and periods based on the wetlands conservation status and potential risks of damage.
The province also intends to establish a Mulchat Oreum Wetland Conservation Plan and conduct regular monitoring to manage ecosystem changes. While prioritizing preservation, it will also explore ways to coexist with local communities through eco-tourism and environmental education initiatives.
Lim Hong-cheol, Director of Jejus Climate and Environment Bureau, stated, This designation marks the starting point for passing Jejus outstanding inland wetlands intact to future generations, adding, We will do our utmost to preserve the unique ecological value of Mulchat Oreum Wetland.
Details regarding the wetland protection area designation notice can be found on the Jeju Provincial Government website. Opinions may be submitted to the Environmental Policy Division during the administrative notice period.
